Archie Vance “Hooker” McDonald

February 6, 1946 — May 12, 2024

St. Pauls

Archie Vance “Hooker” McDonald Jr was born on February 6, 1946 in Bladen County to Eursla Stephens and Archie McDonald. He was the second of four children and the only boy. His siblings are Mary Shaw Zurlo, Helen Marie Moran and Myrtle Carol Mincin. As a child he was raised on a farm and was no stranger to hard work. He graduated from Tar Heel High School in 1964 and continued to reunite with his classmates regularly. He played all sports while in school and especially loved to recall his time playing baseball. He married Mary Lois Fields at the age of 20 and they remained married for a total of 57 years. He worked at Burlington Mills for several years but left to pursue his first love of farming in 1970. He successfully farmed many crops to include tobacco, peanuts, wheat, corn and soybeans for the remainder of his life whether by actual work or providing close supervision to those who assisted him. He faithfully attended Bladen Union Baptist Church and held many positions there to include Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and served on many committees from time to time. He was a true baptist and loved to fellowship with others. He was a people person and never met a stranger. He could strike up a conversation with anyone and there isn’t a person who met him who doesn’t retain a memory of him. He loved to dance and became a legend at the Page’s Lake Stomp which he and his older sister, Mary Shaw had mastered. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, his sisters Mary Shaw Zurlo and Helen Moran.

He leaves to cherish his memory his sister, Carol(David) Mincin of Maryland and daughter Elisabeth, Brother in Law Joseph Zurlo of Washington DC and daughter Melanie, Brother in Law Bob Moran, nieces Melissa Goad, Janel Baki, and Leslie Ellis and nephew Jonny Baki along with all of their children and their newest grandchild Archer John Ellis who was named after him. His memory will live on in four children that he raised, Michael Ross, Cathy Ross Boyd, Mary Lynn McDonald and Vanessa. (Mitchell) Hughes. His grandchildren include Ethan and Jacob Boyd, Wyatt and Layla McBee and Carley, Lacey and Taylor Hughes all of whom he loved endlessly. He had a host of friends, family and community members who will greatly miss him and cherish the moments they all shared.

Pallbearers for the family will include Glenn Willis, Michael Mauldin, Mitchell Hughes, Ethan and Jacob Boyd and Chris McBee.  Honorary pallbearers are Wyatt McBee and Taylor Hughes.
