Derrick Shaw Locklear, of Maxton, NC was born on February 8, 1967 to Laura Arthurs and Ronnie Clark. Derrick was adopted by his maternal grandparents, whom he referred to as “Mama and Daddy” Ashby (Sweetie) and Pearlie Locklear. Derrick entered into his eternal home on September 8, 2025, at the age of 58.
Derrick is preceded in death by his biological mother, Laura Arthurs, biological father Ronnie Clark, maternal grandparents, Ashby and Pearlie Locklear; paternal grandparents Timothy and Sally Clark; two brothers Lacy E. Locklear and Noah H. Arthurs, two sisters Lendora Lowery and Cynthia Ballard, an honorary sister Angie Oxendine, and a special mother-in-law Helen Locklear.
He leaves to cherish his memories: High school sweetheart and devoted wife of 39 years, Tabitha Locklear, three children whom he loved unconditionally, Jordan Shaw Locklear, Amber Lee Locklear, and Casey Nicole Locklear. Eleven grandchildren who brought him endless joy; Layla, Nolan, Konnor, Brooklyn, Jordan Jr "JJ”, Kreed, Logan, Legend, Kalani, Cali and Kobe; a special daughter-in-law Leticia Locklear, son-in-law Jermaine Cummings, father-in-law Lee Locklear, two brother-in-laws, Ricky Locklear and Joshua Locklear and his best friend Stephen Brooks.
Derrick was blessed to have two sets of siblings, and he loved them all equally.
He is survived by two adopted brothers, Laney Locklear and Mack Locklear; four adopted sisters Genese Paul, Geralene Oxendine, Angelia Fields and Doris Locklear; two biological brothers Cole Arthurs and Ian Arthurs and three biological sisters Cynthia Arthurs, April Locklear, and Amanda Brown.
Derrick was a true public servant devoting his life to a career in the law enforcement profession and in service to others. He served as a deputy with the Robeson County Sheriff Office several years before beginning his career at the UNCP Police Department. He faithfully served the UNCP community for over twenty years, rising to the rank Lieutenant, the second highest rank in the department at the time. Derrick retired from UNCP in December of 2023. Shortly after his retirement, he rejoined the Robeson County Sheriff Office in February of 2024 continuing his lifelong commitment to law enforcement and serving his community.
Derrick was a beacon of light and true advocate for his family. He genuinely loved all his family and expressed it with each encounter. He had a unique ability to master the art of friendship with anyone he met. His life was truly a reflection of God’s love.
