Obituary

Listen to Obituary

Glenn Kyle Johnson Jr., known to many on the road as “Big Mac,” completed his final mile on April 27, 2026, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, passing peacefully at the age of 77.

Born on January 16, 1949, at home in Parkton, North Carolina, Kyle lived a life defined by hard work, loyalty, and a deep love for the open road. A proud Navy veteran, he served his country during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Raleigh before beginning the career that would become his life’s calling.

Kyle was an owner/operator of an eighteen-wheeler and a legend along the I-95 “super-slab,” logging more than four million accident-free miles from the Florida Keys to Baltimore, Maryland—and just about everywhere in between. He had a special fondness for his FLD 120 Freightliner, calling it a true “workhorse,” though he also spent time behind the wheel of a Mack and an International. Whether hauling vegetables in refrigerated trailers or running flatbeds, Kyle knew the road like few others. If something broke down, the advice was simple: “Call Kyle—he’s seen it before.”

His CB handle, “Big Mac,” suited him well—not just for his presence on the road, but for the larger-than-life stories, humor, and steady reliability he brought to those around him. Through trucking, and with a little help from his boss Bubba, Kyle met the love of his life, Alyce, proving that sometimes the best routes in life aren’t found on a map.

Kyle is survived by his devoted wife, Claire Alyce Turner (Edge) Johnson; his twin sons, James Kyle Johnson and Colleen of Vero Beach, Florida and Timothy Glenn Johnson of White Oak, North Carolina; his granddaughter, Johanna Kylee Johnson of Parkton; and his stepsons, Robert Gordon Edge of Summerville, South Carolina, and Daniel Keith Edge of Maplewood, New Jersey.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlotte Virginia Acree Johnson and Glenn Kyle Johnson Sr., both of Parkton, North Carolina; his brothers, David DeWitt Johnson and Arthur “Tookie” Johnson; and his sister, Julie Johnson Autry.

Kyle will be remembered for his strong hands, steady heart, and the countless miles he traveled without incident—something he was quietly proud of, though he might have joked that the real miracle was surviving traffic on I-95. He leaves behind a legacy of dedication, resilience, and just enough humor to remind us all not to take the road—or life—too seriously.

A funeral service will be held Sunday, May 3rd at 2:00 p.m.

His final haul may be complete, but his stories, laughter, and love will ride on with all who knew him.
