Joseph Cleveland Young, 84, of Lumberton, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2026, at UNC Health Southeastern.

Born on April 29, 1942, in Bennettsville, South Carolina, Joseph was the son of the late Henry Cleveland Young and Madeline Thorndyke Young. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend whose quiet strength and kind spirit touched many lives.

Joseph dedicated 36 years of service to Alamac Knitting Industry, where he was known for his strong work ethic and dependability. Outside of work, he enjoyed spending time at the beach, visiting friends at Wilson Automotive, playing horseshoes and time spent with his faithful companion Riley. He especially enjoyed simple pleasures in life, including McDonald's mocha frappes and french fries.

He is survived by his loving wife, Shelby Davis Young; two sons, Joseph Cleveland Young, II (Lisa) and Jason Henry Young (Heather); one daughter, Melissa Young Kinlaw (Jerry); one sister, Rhetta Griffin; six grandchildren, Brenda A. Walters (Bradley), Trevor F. Kinlaw (Summer), Breanna Y. Weibe (Cory), Morgan K. Young, Parker R. Young, and Elin K. Young; and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Dustin Lynn Kinlaw.

A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., officiated by Father Zachary.
