Walter “Graham” Smith Sr., 85, of St. Pauls, passed away on July 31, 2013. He was born September 7, 1927 to the late Walter and Annie Graham Smith. He is survived by his wife of 60 years Shirley Hurtt Smith; children Walter G. Smith Jr.(Sherri); Judy Smith (Mal Owen), Stevie Smith and grandsons Stuart Smith (Stephanie), Seth Smith, and Josh Smith; great grandson Stratton Smith; sisters Lois Livingston, Esther Arne, and Jane Carlyle (Cecil) and special friends the Helen and Jimmy Lowery family. Graham grew up in Tolarsville, attended St. Pauls High School, Oak Ridge Military Academy, North Carolina State University and served in the US Army. He was a veteran of the Korean War, and was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars and one United Nations Service Medal. He was a devoted farmer, husband, and father. Graham was awarded Outstanding Young Farmer by the St. Pauls Jaycees, the Lumberton Chamber of Commerce, and the Robeson County Crop Promotion Association. His family was the ASC Farm Family of the Year. He was highly respected in his community, and was always ready to help anyone in need. Graham was a faithful Deacon, and Trustee of Tolarsville Baptist Church, served on the St. Pauls City School Board of Education; First Union National Bank Board of Directors; Robeson County Board of Health; North Carolina Farm Bureau Board of Directors; Federal Tobacco Marketing Advisory Committee; Flue-Cured Tobacco Stabilization Corporation Board of Directors; USDA-ASCS County Committee; and was past president of Robeson County Farm Bureau. A funeral service will be conducted at Tolarsville Baptist Church at 11 am on Saturday, August 3, 2013 with Revs. William Gentry, Jeff Broadwell and Tim Sellers officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 2, from 6-8 pm at McNeill Mackie Funeral Home in St. Pauls. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Tolarsville Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, PO Box 558, St. Pauls, NC 28384. Arrangements by McNeill Mackie Funeral Home, St. Pauls.
